Here’s the thing: I’ve discovered that little boys don’t have quite the extensive accessorizing capabilities as girls. No bows, pearly necklaces, headbands, flowery hats, sparkling bracelets… the list continues. Once an article of clothing even smells of being girlie, it’s off limits to boys. Why? I could go into a rant about societal expectations, but it’s just the way things are these days.
I’ve noticed a similar trend in men’s apparel, too, and was thus inspired to write out a crochet pattern for a men’s hat. In fact, not wanting to limit it to a singular hat, I made two: One, a warm, thick hat perfect for a blustering winter day, and the second a thinner (yet just as cozy) hat great for sunny autumn afternoons. Special thanks to Jeremy Benson for modeling one of the hats…
Winter Standard Guy Hat

- ch = chain
- st = stitch
- sl st = slip stitch
- dc = double crochet

R1: Using two strands at a time of color 1 yarn, ch 3 and sl st to make a ring (or make a magic loop); ch 2, 12 dc’s in center of ring, sl st to join (12).
R2: ch 2, 2 dc’s in ea st around, sl st to join (24).
R3: ch 2, *1dc, 2dc* repeat around, sl st to join (36).
R4: ch 2, *1dc, 1dc, 2dc* repeat around, sl st to join (48).
R5: ch 2, *1 dc in first 7 st’s, then 2 dc’s in next* repeat around, sl st to join (54).
R6-R12: ch 2, 1 dc in ea st around, sl st to join. Note: when doing sl st to join R8, tie in yarn color 2 to inside of hat using two strands and sl st with new color to change. Continue rest of rows (R9 – R12) using second color.
Finish off and weave in ends.
