Essential Oil Diffuser Scarf Crochet Pattern

Essential Oil Diffuser Scarf Crochet Pattern

Essential Oil Diffuser Scarf Crochet Pattern

You can’t be unaware of essential oils.  They smell good, they enhance so many things, and as I’m getting the vibe from some of my “oily friends”, they can be part of a healthy lifestyle.  Confession: I’m like 3% educated about essential oils, but from the four or five rollers I’ve tried, I’m liking it so far.  Plus, tea tree oil came in REAL handy when our household got hit bad with lice.  So there’s that.

In my limited knowledge of essential oils, there are a few ways to use them: dilute and roll on your skin, put in a spray, disperse the oils through a room diffuser, use earrings or necklaces as fashionable diffusers, or my own little invention: a Diffuser Scarf!  These are awesome for fellow midwesterners like myself that basically live in scarves as the first leaves begin to fall, the plight of winter makes us grumble about ice scrapers, and when there’s that freak week of snow in April.  Or May.  Or whenever it pleases because The Great Lakes keep everyone on their toes.

A scarf, you ask?  Why yes.  A scarf.  The key here is to first start with a ridiculous fantastic handmade scarf (I know a crafty lady if you need someone who plays with yarn), and add a leather cuff.  The leather cuff can act as the diffuser by dripping a few drops of oil onto it, and it diffuses throughout the day!

Have I gotten you interested yet?  If you are, I’ve got a few in my Etsy shop that are just waiting for a new home.  Oils I’ve heard recommended to diffuse on the scarf (or other oil accessories) are Lavender, Orange, or Frankincense.  How many drops?  That’s where my knowledge stops – maybe 3 or 5?  Other oils to try?  No clue.  But I have pals that will know way more than me if you need an educator, and once I get my head out of yarn clouds someday I hope to know more, too.

You can wear it different ways, too: pop that collar for sophistication and sass (see photo above!), or roll it over for a chunky and cozy look (photos below!).  Wear with a coat, wear without, just wear it because it’s super rad.

Looking to make your own diffuser scarf?  You’re in luck!  Listed below is my FREE crochet pattern so you can make one for you, or for all your holiday favorite people, or to sell in your own Etsy shop.  Whatevs!

ESSENTIAL OIL DIFFUSER SCARF CROCHET PATTERN

Materials

  • Worsted Weight Yarn (two strands at once)
  • Crochet Hook Size M/N
  • Darning Needle (for weaving in ends)
  • Leather Band or Strip of Suede 6”-8” long
  • Leather Punch

Abbreviations

  • r = row
  • ch = chain
  • st = stitch
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • sk = skip stitch
  • *instructions* = repeat around

Basic Construction

You will be crocheting a straight scarf with a Moss Stitch.  Each row you will single crochet, chain 1, and skip the next stitch, and the next row you will single crochet into the chain-one space you created in the previous round.  Each row should have 12 single crochets across, with the chain-one spaces in between.  Once you’ve finished the straight scarf, you will twist it once, and join the two ends with single crochets.  Then add a leather cuff around the join spot.

Directions

R1: Using two strands of yarn at once, ch 25, turn, *1sc, sk1, ch1* across beginning in 3rd ch from hook, then finish with 1sc in last ch. (12 sc’s across with ch-1 gaps between).

R2 – R100: ch 2, turn, *sc in ch-1 space, ch 1, sk1* and finish with sc in last ch-1-space.  Do not finish off yarn.

Your scarf should now measure about 8” across by 36” long without stretching the yarn.  You may add or subtract rows as needed.

Lay scarf flat with row 1 in one hand, and row 100 in the other.  Bring the two ends together, but rotate the side in your right hand so that a twist is made in the scarf.  This means that the scarf won’t lie perfectly flat once it is finished. It will bulk up the scarf and give it a cool twist to what would normally be a traditional looking infinity scarf.

Taking your working yarn end, align the stitches of row 100 on top of row 1 (making sure the twist is in there!), and sc the two layers together.  Finish with long tails.

Gathering the part that you just joined in one hand, bunch the area together and use the long tails to sew the layers together.  Then lay your cuff on top, and you can continue to use the long tails to attach the cuff.  If you run out of yarn, simply attach a new double-strand and sew in any ends.

Leather Cuff

I found long strips of suede at Hobby Lobby. I cut it so it would be long enough to wrap around the bulk of the scarf, with some overlap so I could sew the cuff closed.  I also punched holes so that I could create criss-cross stitches around the cuff to better attach it to the scarf.  But you do you!  Punch the holes however you like to create cool designs.  My cuff came as 1.5” wide and I cut the length to be 7”. Many craft stores have pre-designed bracelets or leather tags that you could improvise into a cuff if you do not have access to a leather punch.  Another option would be to purchase leather cord to braid and attach the braid around the scarf as a cuff.

Adding Oil

Depending on your leather cuff, you might be able to see the oil pretty well when you drip it directly onto the leather.  I like to be a little sneaky and drop it on the backside of the leather so you don’t see the wet mark of the oil on the leather.  Add 3-5 drops of your favorite oil and add additional oil as needed as you diffuse through the day.
